Projects that innovate aren’t sprints (even if we sometimes use design sprints), but rather a marathon. The initial burst of inspiration can fade, and the long, winding road of development, with its detailed problem-solving and project work, can be draining. Thankfully, I have some parts of a project that help keep the energy high and the team and me motivated. Here are five energizers that make me both happy and motivated.

1. The Satisfaction of Visualized Progress 🎯

There’s something incredibly powerful about seeing your progress laid out in front of you. A physical Kanban board with sticky notes moving from “To Do” to “Done” is a prime example. Seeing that column of completed tasks grow day by day is a huge morale booster. It gives a sense of accomplishment and makes the abstract idea of “progress” feel tangible. Whether it’s a digital tool like a Planner app or a simple whiteboard, a visual representation of your team’s hard work provides a continuous source of motivation and reminds everyone just how far they’ve come. This feeling of tangible progress is what truly empowers us all.

2. Engaging All the Senses 🎨

Innovation isn’t just about logic and data; it’s about creativity and new perspectives. In my projects, I use human-focused methods like design thinking and user experience design, so innovation also include exploring the use of many senses. For example, using different colored lights, creating soundscapes, or thinking about textures. It is so fun and creative to be in this phase. For example if a project include some kind of physical space or room, or a physical product, I get renewed energy. (Read more about my five senses design tips for a quick inspiration.)

3. Celebrating Milestones 🎉

While visualizing progress is a continuous energizer, celebrating milestones is a distinct and powerful way to honor the team’s achievements. This isn’t just about moving a sticky note; it’s about taking a moment to applaud each other’s efforts. Whether it’s a small, informal gathering to acknowledge a major design decision or a team lunch to celebrate a successful prototype, these moments of recognition are vital. They reinforce a culture of appreciation and teamwork, reminding everyone that their contributions are valued and that together, they are achieving great things. I also like to see colleagues happy, it’s as simple as that!

4. User and Customer Participation 🗣️

Bringing users or customers into the development process is a game-changer. While it requires an initial investment of energy, the payoff is immense. The feedback and insights you receive are invaluable, providing a reality check and often a dose of fresh inspiration. Hearing directly from someone who will use your product can validate your ideas, expose blind spots, and give you a renewed sense of purpose. This interaction transforms the project from an abstract concept into a solution for a real person, which is an incredibly potent motivator.

5. Hands-on Workshops with Tangible Outcomes ✍️

I prefer workshops before a meeting whenever it’s possible. A hands-on workshop in the ideating or prototyping phase is fun and rewarding. By creating a dedicated space for sketching, building mock-ups, or rapid prototyping, you can quickly transform ideas into something you can see and touch. These sessions give you a small, tangible taste of the final product, which is incredibly energizing. Seeing ideas take physical form, even in a rough state, makes the project feel more real and closer to completion, providing the momentum needed to push forward.
