Some sticky notes on a whoteboard

So, you’ve got a problem or a project and you need some fresh ideas? Time to brainstorm!

Brainstorming is basically a group thinking session where everyone throws out ideas, no matter how crazy they seem. The goal? To spark creativity and find solutions you might not have considered on your own!

Brainstorming is a group creativity technique designed to generate a large number of ideas in a short period. Its primary goal is to overcome individual limitations in thinking and unlock a wider range of creative solutions to a problem.

The Basics Of Brainstorming

The process typically involves a group of people spontaneously contributing ideas without initial judgment or criticism. This free-flowing exchange encourages participants to build upon each other’s suggestions, leading to novel and diverse concepts. The emphasis is on quantity over quality in the initial stages, with evaluation and refinement occurring later. Brainstorming aims to foster a collaborative and uninhibited environment for innovative thinking.

Here’s How To Make Your Brainstorming Session a Success:

  1. Gather Your Crew: Invite a diverse group of people with different perspectives. The more brains, the better!
  2. Set the Stage: Find a comfortable, relaxed space where everyone feels free to speak their mind. This is more important than you think, so select the right room with these tips!
  3. Warm Up Those Brains: Start with a quick icebreaker to get the creative juices flowing.
  4. State the Goal: Clearly define the problem or project you’re brainstorming for.
  5. Let the Ideas Flow: Encourage everyone to contribute, no matter how outlandish the idea. No judgment allowed!
  6. Capture Every Idea: Use a whiteboard, sticky notes, or even a digital tool to jot down every single idea.
  7. Build on Each Other: Encourage participants to build on each other’s ideas.
  8. Don’t Get Stuck in Analysis Paralysis: Resist the urge to criticize or evaluate ideas during the brainstorming phase.
  9. Refine and Prioritize: Once you have a good list of ideas, take some time to refine them and prioritize the best ones.
  10. End your brainstorming session with a quick recap of the key takeaways and next steps.

How To Prepare A Brainstorm

To host a successful brainstorm, especially with a large group or for a client, requires meticulous preparation.

If you want to prepare for a brainstorm think through the practicalities beforehand. This involves creating detailed presentations with clear instructions and relevant examples, tailored specifically to the unique challenge and the participants’ skill levels.

Facilitators spend hours crafting presentations and worksheets, carefully considering the time allotted and the appropriate level of difficulty for the specific group. Even when brainstorming with a small group of colleagues, preparation is a good idea. Regardless of the group size, a tip is to always use a presentation to guide participants through the process.
